With the November 2020 presidential election only days away, members of the ACLU student chapter at South Texas College of Law Houston recently took their civic duties to heart.
Ten students established a base station and tent in the STCL Houston faculty/staff parking lot for a drive-thru voter registration event for Houstonians. Over the course of the day, the law students registered more than a dozen new Harris County voters.
The law school’s Democratic Law Students Association and Black Law Students Association assisted ACLU student chapter members in promoting the event.
“Voting is so central to the way our country works, and yet voting laws can be incredibly complicated,” said Markia Bordeaux, president of the school’s ACLU student chapter. “As attorneys and future attorneys, we are uniquely empowered to serve our communities by sharing our time and the knowledge we have gained through our legal education and training.”
The ACLU student chapter will devote the month of October to “Getting Out the Vote,” including encouraging members to become poll workers and poll monitors. The students also will share a newsletter with important dates, voting tips, and a non-partisan voting guide.
Bordeaux encourages those who still need to register to vote — or those who are unsure of their registration status — to visit www.votetexas.gov for more information.
“We want to stress the importance of voting and becoming civically engaged,” said Bordeaux. “As future leaders of the legal profession, we know all too well that our elected leaders play a role in creating and shaping laws that affect us personally and professionally. If you can, vote early and volunteer!”
