South Texas College of Law Houston recently was pleased to host an honorary, virtual event for 2021 Presidential Fellows — the law school’s 1L students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement.
STCL Houston President and Dean Michael F. Barry welcomed the 91 scholars to the online celebration, sharing his congratulations and pride at the “determination, professionalism, and tenacity” that led to their high scholastic achievement.
Barry also recognized and thanked the many supportive friends and family members of the honorees who logged into the event to applaud the students’ hard work and success.
Through the Presidential Fellows program, qualifying students receive unique opportunities to learn, network, grow, and develop as law students. Notable benefits of becoming a Presidential Fellow include:
- Recognition as a top performer at the law school;
- Invitations to attend alumni networking events at no charge;
- Opportunities to work with alumni, faculty, and judges in students’ particular areas of interest;
- Specific counseling on applying for judicial internships and clerkship positions;
- Priority assistance through STCL Houston’s Career Resource Center; and the
- Opportunity to take professional headshots, and obtain funds to attend CLE events.
In discussing the special connections fostered through the program, Barry encouraged the Presidential Fellows to network with the school’s outstanding alumni who have been in their shoes and know the challenges law students face.
He noted that the Presidential Fellows set the bar for excellence at STCL Houston by embodying the best traits of the school community, including diversity, character and integrity, mentorship, and volunteerism and service to others.
Barry elaborated, “You add another hallmark to these commendable qualities, however — one that will fuel your continued success and enable you to inspire excellence in your classmates and colleagues. In a word, this prized tool is leadership. An invaluable asset, your leadership will power your ability to make a lasting difference in the world.”
Following Barry’s address to the students, Ryan Haun ’06 — immediate past-president of the STCL Houston Alumni Association — offered his congratulations and advice to the new Presidential Fellows. The students also were treated to inspiring remarks by Cherie Taylor, vice president and associate dean for Academics, and Professor Val Ricks.
In concluding the event, Barry told the students, “Just as our administration, faculty, and alumni stand ready to support your success, I encourage each of you to help one another throughout your law school studies. As you know, STCL Houston is, indeed, a unique school — and we are a family. Encourage and support one another. Work as a team. And assist each other in maintaining the exceptional academic track record you’ve begun.”
