A panel discussion titled “On the Borderline: Individual Rights in the Face of Police Power” will be hosted Jan. 18 by the Benny Agosto, Jr. Diversity Center at South Texas College of Law Houston. Community leaders and STCL Houston alumni from the Houston area will lead the discussion.

Here are just a few of the questions to be addressed:
- Can I say no when the police ask to search my car?
- Can the police ask if I’m a citizen?
- Can I refuse a warrantless search of my house?
- If an officer asks for my name, do I have to provide it?
The event, which is free and open to the public, is set from 4-5 p.m. in Garrett Townes Auditorium at STCL Houston. Information conversations will follow in the atrium.

Dru Brenner-Beck, assistant professor of law at South Texas College of Law Houston, has nearly 30 years of practice experience and has worked with STCL Houston’s Actual Innocence Clinic as an adjunct professor since 2019. A retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel and judge advocate, she began her military career as an intelligence officer in 1984. |

Cesar Espinosa, executive director at FIEL Houston, has spent more than a decade advocating locally and nationally for immigrant rights in many public campaigns. He has fought for immigrant and student rights justice in such cases as the HB 1403 Bill regarding Texas in-state tuition, and the Dream Act. |

D’Angelo M. Lowe ’15, managing attorney at Lowe Law, PLLC, has been practicing law since 2016. The STCL Houston alumnus prides himself on being an advocate for the people. |

Jacob “Jake” Monty, managing partner at Monty & Ramirez, LLC has successfully practiced at the intersection of immigration, labor, and employment laws for two decades. He is a nationally recognized authority on issues facing employers with large Hispanic workforces. |
