Why did you choose to attend South Texas College of Law Houston?
I chose this law school because of its distinguished reputation for producing talented litigation attorneys and courtroom lawyers. I also noted how close the STCL Houston community is throughout Houston and beyond. It was the only law school I considered, and looking back, I know I made the right decision.
Where are you working next summer?
I will be a summer associate at Frost Brown Todd LLP’s Houston office.
How did you secure that employment opportunity?
I participated in the law school’s On-Campus Interview program.
How did the Career Resource Center (CRC) help you successfully navigate the recruitment process?
My terrific advisor Bianca reviewed numerous resume drafts and helped me better convey my personality in my cover letters. The Career Resource Center played a significant role in preparing me for OCI and helping me receive an offer from such a great firm.
What are your career goals for the future?
I plan to become a litigation attorney and an active, involved part of the Houston legal community.
What advice would you share with future generation law students going through recruitment?
Jump in with both feet. Also, don’t be afraid to reach out and speak to attorneys. Be sure to take their advice when they offer it because they were in your position and know exactly what is going on with your studies and career endeavors. Further, get involved at school through organizations and networking events. You have joined a great community full of attorneys who wish to see you succeed and will enthusiastically help you where they can — if you just ask and engage with them.
Which professors have influenced you and or your career path the most?
Professors who had the most influence on me and my career path are Dean Ted Field and Judge Jennifer Walker Elrod of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. Dean Field is a litigation-minded professor and is currently my faculty advisor for my law review comment. Judge Elrod taught Civil Procedure II as a visiting professor. Her classes were the most memorable sessions I have had at STCL Houston due to the wealth of practical knowledge and advice she provided to us from her experiences as an attorney and current judge. Another influential person is Professor Michael Whitmire, who helped me enhance my brief writing skills by writing more authentically and directly as well as forming more understandable contentions.
What student organizations have you been involved with?
I am currently involved with the South Texas Law Review, the Student Bar Association, and the Aggie Law Students Association.
Beyond the Career Resource Center, how has the South Texas Law community supported your growth?
The South Texas community feels like a second family. Being around my fellow students and the professors directly supports my growth because we are all dedicated to being the best versions of ourselves and improving our writing and understanding of the law. STCL Houston is an ideal environment for personal growth and student support in every aspect.
