Types of Financial Aid

Scholarships

All entering students are automatically considered for Dean’s Merit scholarships based on their undergraduate performance and LSAT score.

Students are also encouraged to search for scholarships outside of STCL Houston. View a list of organizations who have annual scholarships.

Federal Loans

Students are encouraged to borrow only the amount they need and to consider alternative options such as Federal Work Study. To gain additional information regarding student loans, please visit studentaid.gov

Federal Work Study

Eligible students who complete the FAFSA and have demonstrated financial need may be awarded federal work study as part of their financial aid package.

Federal work study positions are available on and off campus, and permit students to work up to 20 hours per week.  As a result, this reduces the total amount of loans one may need to borrow.

Tuition Equalization Grant (TEG)

Texas residents are automatically considered for the Texas Educational Grant. The amount of funds are limited and cover only a small portion of a student’s costs.

Private Alternative Loans

Private alternative loans are available to students who, in unique circumstances, do not qualify for Federal Direct Loans. To qualify for this type of loan, a student will apply through a private lender.

Applying for Financial Aid

In order to begin the Financial Aid process, you will need to complete the following steps:

1) FASFA

Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), using the school code 004977. The FASFA will allow the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid to determine your federal loan eligibility.

2) Visit STANLEY

Once packaged, access your STANLEY account and accept, modify or decline your financial aid award offer.

3) Counseling & Promissory Note

If you are accepting a Federal Unsubsidized loan and/or a Graduate PLUS loan, complete the Entrance Loan Counseling session and Master Promissory Notes.

Housing in Downtown Houston

South Texas College of Law Houston does not have on-campus housing. However, there are several great options in the surrounding community. We have students who live within walking distance, those who are a quick drive away, and those who commute from the suburbs around Houston. The city has a varied rental market from luxury downtown apartments, to basic walk-ups, to houses with back yards. There are several apartment and housing locators that work with our students to successfully meet their housing needs, and their service is free of charge. We encourage students to take advantage of the knowledge and expertise these professionals provide to find a place that fits in their budget.

The purchaser is encouraged to comparison shop, other manufacturers, and vendors. Apple offers discounted pricing for all students attending higher education institutions at its online “Apple Store for Education.”

We appreciate your consideration of this as it is vital you be prepared as we proceed into the semester.  If you have any questions please direct those to George Milz, Senior Director, Information Technology, and Information Services, at gmilz@stcl.edu.

Student Parking

The College operates two parking lots exclusively for student parking. Lot #1 is at the SW corner of San Jacinto and Bell Streets, with the entrance on San Jacinto.  Lot #2 is located at the SE corner of San Jacinto and Bell Streets, with the entrance on Bell.  You must use your South Texas College of Law Houston student ID card to gain access to these lots; however, access will not be activated until you have completed and submitted the Student Vehicle Information Form (see link below). There is no charge to park in the student lots.

In addition to the school owned parking lots, STCL Houston has negotiated student parking rates at several of the nearby parking garages.  These rates are substantially below the regular market rates for downtown Houston.  Below you will find a parking map of our downtown neighborhood, which you may use in deciding where to park for the upcoming year.
