Eric Williams II Only 2022 National Jurist Law Student of the Year Named from a Texas Law School

Eric B. Williams II, a third-year student at South Texas College of Law Houston for whom law is his second career, was the only honoree from a Texas law school named a prestigious National Jurist Magazine 2022 Law Student of the Year. He is featured in the publication’s edition released March 9.

“Individuals of Eric’s character, capability and accomplishment are rare,” said South Texas President and Dean Michael F. Barry. “He is well-deserving of this recognition.”

City of Houston Proclaims March 8, 2022, as Genora K. Boykins Day

At the March 8 City Council meeting, Councilman Michael Kubosh read a proclamation celebrating the many achievements of South Texas College of Law Houston (STCL Houston) alumna and board chair Genora K. Boykins ’85, and Mayor Sylvester Turner officially declared March 8, 2022, as Genora K. Boykins Day.

Council members took turns congratulating Boykins, recognizing how she has “inspired other women to take on big, public roles” and “served as an inspiring role model for the diverse Houston community,” among a variety of accolades. The honor was actually given on International Women’s Day, a fortunate coincidence.

Free March 19 “Fresh Start” Event Designed to Help Qualified Individuals

The Benny Agosto, Jr. Diversity Center at South Texas College of Law Houston and Porter|Hedges will co-sponsor Clearing Criminal Records: Fresh Start Initiative March 19 to allow individuals to discuss options and next steps about their cases with volunteer lawyers.

The event is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ripley House Gym, 4410 Navigation in Houston. Attendees should, but aren’t required to, bring copies of their full record. The purpose of the free event is to allow individuals to discuss their cases and determine whether they qualify to have their cases expunged (cleared) or sealed (not allowed to be disclosed).

STCL Houston’s AMICUS and the Women’s Law Society Celebrate Women’s History Month with a Speaker Series Featuring Four Trailblazing Queer Women from Houston  

The AMICUS and Women’s Law Society will host a speaker series throughout the month of March featuring four trailblazing queer women from the Houston area.

This series, part of the law school’s Women’s History Month celebration, will be held at the law school, located at 1303 San Jacinto Street in Houston. Each week will feature a different speaker. The series begins March 1 from 5 -7 p.m., with former Houston Mayor Annise Parker.

The Black Law Students Association at South Texas College of Law Houston is hosting a panel discussion Feb. 24 at 6 p.m. featuring four prominent Black attorneys from the Houston area.

The event, part of the law school’s Black History Month celebration, will be held in Garrett Townes Auditorium at the law school, located at 1303 San Jacinto Street in Houston.

Six STCL Houston Students Selected to Participate in ABA Judicial Clerkship Program

Six South Texas College of Law Houston students are participating Feb. 10-12 in the American Bar Association’s virtual Judicial Clerkship Program (JCP), designed to foster relationships between judges and law students of color.

The goals of the event include encouraging more law students of color to apply for clerkships positions. Judges and students from around the nation are participating.

STCL Houston’s First Black Female Alumni Association President Builds Strong Connections

Catina Haynes Perry ’06, an attorney in the Civil Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, recently became the first Black female president of the South Texas College of Law Houston Alumni Association. She graduated from STCL Houston with honors in 2006 and has served on the Alumni Association board since 2016.

“Catina has demonstrated exceptional leadership in the legal profession and in her time on the Alumni Association board, and we are fortunate she is investing her time to lead this important organization,” said South Texas President and Dean Michael F. Barry. “Her legal insights and experience, her depth of knowledge of Houston and her strong connections to the community are all important. But her strength of character makes her the ideal person to lead our alumni as South Texas heads into its centennial next year.”
