Gaspar Gonzalez ’21 is an associate attorney for Wilson Cribbs + Goren — one of the largest real estate practice firms in Houston — and the youngest member of STCL Houston’s Transactional Practice Advisory Board.

As a second-career student, Gonzalez chose to pursue law after a family emergency made him realize he needed more flexibility  than his first career in education provided. He left his position of five years as a band director and applied to law school.

The Texas Gulf Coast Area Labor Federation presented South Texas College of Law Houston, along with the other partners in the Keep Harris County Housed coalition, a Fighting for Our Neighbors award during the April 23 Working Family Awards Celebration.

Eric Kwartler, public interest attorney with STCL Houston’s Randall O. Sorrels Legal Clinics represented the law school at the dinner. In 2018, Kwartler created STCL Houston’s Landlord/Tenant practice.

STCL Houston Students Win Two National Advocacy Championships, Increase School’s Total to 138

South Texas College of Law Houston (STCL Houston) students won two national advocacy championships last weekend, increasing the total national victories to 138 –twice as many as any other law school in the country.

With these wins, STCL Houston extends its long-time dominance in legal advocacy. Recently, STCL Houston’s advocacy program –known for its practice-ready, experiential learning opportunities – was ranked No. 3 in the nation in the 2023 U.S. News & World Report’s Best Graduate Schools guide.

Book Cover "Lincoln and Citizenship" Wins Award

South Texas Professor Wins Award for Book on Lincoln’s Views on Citizenship

Mark E. Steiner, professor of law at South Texas College of Law Houston, won his second Award of Superior Achievement from the Illinois State Historical Society (ISHS) — this time for his book Lincoln and Citizenship, published in 2021 by Southern Illinois University Press.

The award, announced April 9, recognizes “superior achievement that serves as a model for the profession and reaches a greater public.” In announcing the award, the ISHS said of Dr. Steiner’s book: “Exceptionally well-written and researched…. This is a valuable addition to Lincoln studies, raising the questions likely to confront students, admirers and critics of the Civil War president in the coming decades.”

STCL Houston Students Receive Recognition at HLSA/LLSA Scholarship Gala

During the 8th Annual Scholarship Gala, hosted April 8 by the Hispanic Law Students Association (HLSA) and the Latinx Law Students Association (LLSA) of the three Houston law schools, numerous South Texas College of Law Houston students were awarded scholarships.

The event was co-hosted by the HLSA and LLSA at STCL Houston, Thurgood Marshall School of Law and the University of Houston Law Center. Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia was the keynote speaker, and STCL alumnus and supporter Benny Agosto, Jr. ’95 spoke and presented the HLSA scholarships to the South Texas students.

McKensie Wren, a 3L and a natural competitor, was drawn to the winning spirit of South Texas College of Law Houston.
