Ken Johnson ’86, Of Counsel at Martin | Walton LLP, was recognized Wednesday for his seven years of distinguished service as chairman of the South Texas College of Law Houston Board of Directors and 20 years total service on the board.
“We are extremely grateful to Ken for his wise and gracious leadership of the South Texas board since 2014,” said Michael F. Barry, president and dean. “He will continue to be an active member of the board, and we value the experience and knowledge his service will bring.”
With Johnson’s transition, Genora K. Boykins ’85 begins her five-year term as chair of the STCL Houston board. Boykins, who served as regional assistant general counsel of NRG Energy, Inc. and Reliant Energy for 31 years, is the first woman and African American to hold this position at the law school.
During Johnson’s leadership tenure, South Texas enhanced support for diversity, equity and inclusion, expanded pro bono clinics, continued building a national reputation for advocacy, and increased the visibility and reputation of the law school, among many other accomplishments.
“I am proud to serve on the South Texas Board of Directors, and it has been an honor to serve as chair of such a talented and knowledgeable board,” Johnson said. “Together, we continue to focus on ensuring the law school excels in educating our students and serving our community.”
Johnson, a 1986 alumnus of STCL Houston, is an experienced attorney with a proven track record of successfully litigating complex, multi-party commercial and tort cases in state and federal courts, and arbitration proceedings nationally. Prior to his role with Martin | Walton LLP, Johnson was an attorney with Fleming|Nolen|Jez LLP for 16 years and with Luttrell, Williams & Johnson, P.C. for seven years.
In addition to his volunteer service for his law school alma mater, Johnson is board chair of the Texas FFA Foundation and assistant scout master for Troop 993 of the Boy Scouts of America, Sam Houston Area Council.
He graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture economics. While attending South Texas, Johnson was a national champion advocate, taught trial skills as an adjunct professor, and trained mock trial and negotiation teams for more than 15 years. He also is a Lifetime Member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
A member of the South Texas Alumni Association Board of Directors from 1997 to 2005, Johnson served as president of the group from 2001 to 2003.
