Free Legal Clinic for Harris County Tenants at Risk of Eviction
WHAT:
South Texas College of Law Houston attorneys and students will provide free legal assistance to Harris County residents at risk of eviction.
With updates almost daily regarding the CDC’s extended eviction moratorium through Oct. 3, many tenants are unaware of their housing rights and of the necessary steps they should take to invoke those rights. Legal representatives and community “navigators” will assist tenants in completing a CDC declaration — which they then need to provide to their landlords — ensuring the renters are protected under the moratorium.
Event volunteers will help tenants resolve the following issues:
— Who is eligible for protection under the extended CDC eviction moratorium?
— What are my rights and what can I do to avoid eviction?
— How can I apply for aid from the Houston-Harris County Rental Assistance Program?
— How can I apply for aid from Harris County’s emergency expense grants?
This pro bono clinic — sponsored by the Houston-Harris County Emergency Rental Assistance Program — is a unified effort between STCL Houston and numerous government partners and community nonprofits, including The Texas Gulf Coast Area Labor Federation, Lone Star Legal Aid, the City of Humble, the YMCA, Catholic Charities, and the Harris County Precinct 2 and Precinct 4 Commissioners’ Offices, among others.
Tenants in need of aid should bring the following documents with them to the clinic:
— Proof of tenant identification;
— Copy of current lease;
— Proof of income;
— Proof of economic hardship due to COVID-19; and
