During the 8th Annual Scholarship Gala, hosted April 8 by the Hispanic Law Students Association (HLSA) and the Latinx Law Students Association (LLSA) of the three Houston law schools, numerous South Texas College of Law Houston students were awarded scholarships.
The event was co-hosted by the HLSA and LLSA at STCL Houston, Thurgood Marshall School of Law and the University of Houston Law Center. Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia was the keynote speaker, and STCL alumnus and supporter Benny Agosto, Jr. ’95 spoke and presented the HLSA scholarships to the South Texas students.
“Today is a historical day because Ketanji Brown Jackson is on the front page of the Houston Chronicle as our first Black female Supreme Court Justice,” Agosto said at the event. “We are making history today, too, by supporting our Hispanic and Latinx law students because one day – like Justice Jackson – they will make headline news for their achievements.”
Diana Dávila, 3L and president of HLSA at STCL Houston, played an instrumental role in planning and executing the scholarship gala, where she was awarded two scholarships for her academic excellence and contributions to the Hispanic community.
“It is astonishing how the Houston Hispanic legal community has created a genuine familia for us,” Dávila said. “Our generous sponsors have donated their money and their time to help build a supportive network and a community of mentors to help us navigate and find our true calling in the legal profession.”
Three organizations provided scholarships to South Texas Students at the event.
