The STCL Houston community is celebrating its new citywide recognition as one of the Houston Chronicle’s “Top Workplaces” for 2020.
From approximately 2,500 applicants, only 130 — roughly 5 percent — earned the esteemed “Top Workplaces” award.
Nearly 150 STCL Houston staff, faculty members, and adjunct professors completed the Houston Chronicle’s “Top Workplaces” survey this year, sharing their feedback on ways STCL Houston offers a friendly and inviting environment for its diverse and dedicated employees.
In a surprise Zoom announcement to the law school community this month, STCL Houston President and Dean Michael F. Barry noted, “The South Texas family long has recognized and respected our one-of-a-kind camaraderie, and now — because of the distinctive, exceptional community we call “The South Texas Difference” — all of Houston can see and appreciate our school and campus environment.”
Barry continued, “During the past several months, I have observed how you have rallied together — with flexibility and creativity — to accommodate student needs amid the unprecedented challenges of this coronavirus pandemic. Working as a team, you have put in long hours and expended extra effort to streamline instruction — whether in person or online. While many other law schools across the nation are struggling, South Texas remains strong and prepared for what the future holds.”
He reiterated that this workplace recognition reflects the special community collectively created and maintained by STCL Houston staff, faculty, and adjunct professors. “To be exceptional, culture must be intentional,” he told law school employees via Zoom. “We are successful because each of us, every day, commits to the wellbeing and support of our students and fellow members of the South Texas family.”
As a special thank you to the community for its collegiality and commitment to students, the school will host celebratory breakfasts for staff, faculty, and adjunct professors in November, followed by an honorary Zoom toast to the community in December.
South Texas also plans to send specially curated care packages — filled with STCL Houston-branded goodies — to members of the South Texas family in January.
