My name is Aricia Amaro, and I am currently a second-year law student.
Why did you choose to attend South Texas College of Law Houston?
I decided to attend South Texas law because of its location and the advocacy program. I knew I made the right decision when I first toured the school and discovered the great community here. I remember briefly talking to a student during the tour about my career interests, and she immediately gave me her number and said to reach out if I ever needed anything. As a first-generation law student, that sense of support and encouragement I felt from the community further guided my decision to attend.
Where are you working next summer?
I am excited to work with Andrews Myers for the first six weeks and Hoover Slovacek for the second six weeks. I applied and interviewed through the On-Campus Interview process.
How did the Career Resource Center help you successfully navigate the recruitment process?
The Career Resource Center has been a tremendous help throughout the entire process. In addition to providing employment and networking opportunities, the CRC helped review my application materials and prepared me for interviews. My advisor, Bianca Edwards, provided the support and encouragement I needed to navigate the recruitment process successfully.
What are your career goals for the future?
I am interested in litigation, but I still have an open mind regarding the specific practice area. I want to be passionate about the work I am doing and have a positive impact on the community.
What advice would you share with the future generation of law students going through recruitment?
I would encourage students to utilize their resources as much as possible. The recruitment process can be overwhelming, so utilizing your resources can really make a difference. A conversation with your advisor or a professor can open many doors and opportunities. One of the best things about attending South Texas Law is building those relationships and connections with people who genuinely want to see you succeed.
Which professors have influenced you and or your career path the most?
All the professors I have had throughout law school have positively impacted the student I am now and the future attorney I aspire to be. In particular, Professor Nelson and Professor Ortiz have both been highly influential throughout my law school journey.
What student organizations have you been involved with?
I am a member of the South Texas Law Review, Phi Delta Phi Legal Honor Society, and the Hispanic Law Student Association.
Beyond the Career Resource Center, how has the law school community supported your growth?
I am originally from Austin, and the community here has helped me feel more at home in Houston. I look forward to entering the legal field with my peers and making positive contributions to the legal community.
