NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson ’97, a South Texas College of Law Houston alumnus, will present the Inaugural Diversity Lecture Oct. 4 for The Benny Agosto, Jr. Diversity Center at STCL Houston.
Johnson has led the national NAACP since 2017. He formerly served as vice chairman of the NAACP National Board of Directors and as state president for the Mississippi State Conference NAACP. He has helped guide the association through a period of re-envisioning and reinvigoration.

The Texas Access to Justice Foundation Board of Directors unanimously adopted a resolution Dec. 10 to recognize South Texas College of Law Houston (STCL Houston) and its accomplished alumnus Benny Agosto, Jr., ’95 for taking action to create a more diverse pipeline of law students entering the legal profession.
“South Texas was honored that the Texas Access to Justice Foundation recognized Benny and Nikki Agosto and our school for our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in the legal profession and greater access to justice,” said Michael F. Barry, president and dean. “Our goal is to become the most intentionally and successfully diverse law school in the nation, and this resolution was an encouraging affirmation of our collective efforts.”
A large crowd of community leaders gathered at South Texas College of Law Houston (STCL Houston) Friday to officially commemorate the law school’s ongoing collaboration with the NAACP Houston Branch to fight for clemency for the 110 soldiers of the 3rd Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment convicted by General Courts-Martial for their alleged role in the 1917 Camp Logan uprising.
Alumna Genora K. Boykins’85 took the helm as chair of the South Texas College of Law Houston board of directors at the Dec. 8 board meeting, becoming the first woman and first African American to win election to this key leadership position at Houston’s oldest law school.
“I am excited to take on the leadership role as chair of the STCL Houston board as we continue to excel in providing an exceptional legal education to our diverse student body,” Boykins said.“I look forwarding to working with the board, Dean Michael Barry, faculty, staff, alumni and students as we provide an innovative and transformative legal education.
